When renting a car in Dubai, in addition to following the official traffic regulations, renters must also consider the specific restrictions and potential penalties imposed by the rental company. By signing the rental agreement, you are agreeing to these terms, which are often more stringent than the general legal regulations.
1. Mileage limits and geography of use
Car rental companies often impose restrictions on the daily or total mileage of the rented car. Exceeding these limits usually results in additional charges for every kilometer beyond the limit. It is also common for rental companies to prohibit driving a rented car outside the UAE without prior written permission. Violating this rule can result in severe fines and the cancellation of insurance coverage.
2. Age requirements and driving experience
There are age restrictions for renting a car in Dubai. Generally, the driver must be over the age of 21, and in some cases, 25, depending on the car class. An international driver’s license or a national document with at least 12 months of driving experience may also be required. Failure to meet these requirements may result in rental denial or increased rental costs.
3. Fuel policy
Most rental companies follow the principle of “full tank on pickup – full tank on return”. This means that the car is provided to you with a full tank, which you are obliged to return also full. If you return the car with insufficient fuel, the company will itself make a filling and will bill at its own, often inflated, price, and may also charge a fee for the service itself.
4. Terms of return of the vehicle
The car should be returned in a clean state. If the car is returned with severe dirt (for example, after a trip off-road or severe dirt in the cabin), a fine may be imposed for an additional wash or cleaning. It is also extremely important to return the car within the specified time frame. Delayed returns are usually subject to additional charges for each hour or day of delay.
5. Insurance and damage
The standard rental package usually includes basic insurance coverage. However, there are exceptions, and a number of damages may not be covered by insurance. These include damage to tires, rims, glass, the bottom of the car, as well as damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, participating in races, or driving on unsuitable roads. In such situations, the renter is solely responsible for the repair costs. Please carefully review the insurance terms before signing the contract.
